Two hundred years at the heart of Westbourne
Westbourne traces its history back to the Domesday Book, was rebuilt after a devastating fire in the 16th century, and once boasted eight alehouses in its market town days. The Stags Head is now one of only three remaining pubs, and it has stood at the centre of village life for the last 200 years.
The name comes from the days when stag hunting in the nearby forests was a pastime of the local gentry, and the pub sign carries an inscription translated as “the Scottish Red Deer”. These days the village is better known as where astronaut Tim Peake grew up.
Once divided into separate lounge and public bars, the pub is now a warm, open plan bar and restaurant, with an outside bar for the warmer days. All the food is home made on the premises, and dogs are very welcome.
